Autumn In The Blue Ridge Mountains
Boone KOA
Boone, North Carolina
October 15 – 19, 2009

Hosts: Bayles' and Moore's

From Autumn to Winter!

Who knew that after two and a half years of planning this rally we’d have record cold, rain and SNOW to bring in this rally? But it happened. The Boone KOA hosts were extremely accommodating; making sure the recreation room had enough heaters in it to keep us warm through our meals and just getting together. Our attendees were: Hosts, Chuck and Bobbie Bayles and Joe and Sue Moore; Henry and Kay Hauffe, Buddy and Maria Rickles, Burnel and Marie Moreau, Les and Ida Cook, Ken and AnneMarie Wellock, John and Romola Laninga, Glenn and Susan Tompkins, Dea and Yvonne Wiseley and SOB’s Bernard and Mary Lang.Barbeque - Glenn & Dea

We started off the rally with a barbeque dinner of chopped pork, chicken quarters, baked beans, coleslaw and hush puppies; adding both chocolate and vanilla sheet cakes for dessert. Bobbie went over the itinerary, but everything would be on your own time except for our gathering for dinner. Of course the weather also played a part in what we all did. After dinner NC Rallysome of the ladies pulled out the cards and spent the evening in the rec room.

Friday everyone scattered to where they felt they wanted to visit. Some took off to see the Mast General Store which has been in business for at least 100 years! Others went to Blowing Rock’s Main Street which is an artsy district of fun things to look at. The weather was cold and rainy and traveling on our curvy roads with fog all around you just isn’t fun, so most stayed put inMast Store their nice warm RV’s. Friday night we had a potluck dinner with Henry and Buddy fighting the cold while they deep fried our turkeys. What you all do for the club is amazing! But we all thank you to the end! Besides the turkey being the best, everyone’s side dishes were a wonderful treat. Again some got together and played cards until their eyelids closed on them.

Ida and SueSaturday, being a Festival Day, still couldn’t get those out of the warmth of their homes, but Bayles’ and Moore’s braved the cold and attended both the Valle Crucis Festival and the Woolly Worm Festival. The Bayles’ do have a 4-wheel drive and got special service parking in the mud since we qualified! Actually it wasn’t that bad although when we left we skated out of the parking lot. We did get to see apple cider being made and enjoyed a glass of the good stuff. Fresh North Carolina apples were also bought. We got to listen to great music and a few other entertaining events….like clogging. Although we were all bundled up we still enjoyed the fun of the Festival. From there we went to the Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk. We weren’t sure we wanted to get out of the car into the cold, but again we braved it and went into the fair. What a hoot watching people try to get a woolly worm up that string for the grand prize of $1000 for the day! ThenBeech Mountain of all things it started SNOWING on us! As we left the park we looked up at the mountain in front of us and low and behold it was FULL OF SNOW! We took off to higher levels, Beech Mountain, and there was snow all around us. What fun we had getting out of the car to take pictures. Some of the others who did not want to go to the fairs because of the cold and mud went on to do more “inside” tours.

Sunday everyone again did their own thing, but in the late afternoon we all converged at the Bayles house in Blowing Rock. We gave everyone a tour of the house and everyone brought appetizers for dinner. It was a fun evening for all and we were happy to have everyone come experience all the renovations we did on our 100 year old cabin.

Despite the cold and rain, curvy roads, fog, and snow it is always great to have the folks of the Traveling Supremes get together. You all are such great people. See you all down the road.
